Cordyceps militaris is an edible medicinal mushroom. It is native to East Asia found in tropical rain forests but now is found all over the world, Cordyceps contains abundant and diverse bioactive compounds and it also contains adenosine and cordyceps. In the mountains of China, the traditional Cordyceps Sinensis grows naturally on caterpillars high. Sinensis may be the most expensive or famous fungus, it is comparatively rare and in the laboratory cannot be easily grown to form a stroma (fruit body) whereas in an artificial environment C. militaris is the most successful commercially cultivated species. Cordyceps militaris invades living insect pupa that enables the fungus to grow and generate spores for reproduction by drawing nutrients from the pupa.
